Welfare properties of spatial competition with location-dependent costs

چکیده
We analyze a two-firm spatial competition model in which firms must transport raw materials from a raw material site to their locations in order to produce. The model has two equilibrium configurations: (i) a symmetric one in which firms locates equidistantly from the raw material site, and (ii) an asymmetric one in which one firm locates at the raw material site and the other locates distantly from it. We show that these two configurations are possible as multiple equilibria, that the asymmetric equilibrium is more efficient than the symmetric one, and that the social welfare first falls then rises as transport costs decline. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Commodity tax competition and industry location under the destination and the origin principle ¬リニ
a r t i c l e i n f o We extend the model by Behrens et al. to the case of non-cooperative commodity taxation and investigate the impacts of tax harmonization and changes in tax principle on equilibrium tax rates, industry location, and welfare. Since our setup features internationally mobile firms, trade frictions, and asymmetric country sizes, it offers a convenient framework within which to ...
متن کاملIncentive Compatible Collusion and Investment∗
We consider a two-stage model in which two firms first invest in R&D to reduce their marginal production costs, and then either compete or collude in the output market. When they collude, they bargain over a cartel agreement to divide the collusive profit. If bargaining breaks down, they revert to duopolistic competition. For both a location model and a linear demand model, we show that firms i...
متن کاملSpatial variability of some soil properties for site specific farming in northern Iran
Evaluating agricultural land management practices requires knowledge of soil spatial variability and understanding their relationships. Spatial distributions for fourteen soil physical and chemical properties were examined in a wheat field in Sorkhankalateh district, in Golestan province, Iran. 101 soil samples at the distances of 5m, 10m and 20m as nested grid were collected at the depth of 0-...
متن کاملA Review of Spatial Factor Modeling Techniques in Recommending Point of Interest Using Location-based Social Network Information
The rapid growth of mobile phone technology and its combination with various technologies like GPS has added location context to social networks and has led to the formation of location-based social networks. In social networking sites, recommender systems are used to recommend points of interest (POIs) to users. Traditional recommender systems, such as film and book recommendations, have a lon...
متن کاملA Clustering Based Location-allocation Problem Considering Transportation Costs and Statistical Properties (RESEARCH NOTE)
Cluster analysis is a useful technique in multivariate statistical analysis. Different types of hierarchical cluster analysis and K-means have been used for data analysis in previous studies. However, the K-means algorithm can be improved using some metaheuristics algorithms. In this study, we propose simulated annealing based algorithm for K-means in the clustering analysis which we refer it a...
